Foreword

The beat of a tongue drum echoing through a forest. Playing a mystical voice of enchantment and haunting rhythm. You can start to feel the beat through your feet. It’s like the roots of the earth came out of the ground into your soles climbing through your heart and deep into your thoughts.

Your eyes start to close and your head starts to nod to the pulse.

The pulse of the drum.

The pulse of the earth.

The pulse of the heart.

The voice of the drum can take you to another world. It takes you out of reality and at the same time it speaks to you what is real. It speaks the beat of all living things in the universe.

It all starts when an infant listens to the heartbeat of the mother while in the womb. Then when the infant is born it cuddles next to the mother’s heart listening to the beat and falling asleep. And the beat never stops but continue to pulsate in your heart and soul.

On the following pages is the path I followed to make a tongue drum from either Cedar or Pine to eventually recording a song with it. I am not saying it will be a beautiful piece of artwork. I’m not claiming anything on my behalf. I’m just a man willing to take the wonderful journey of making a tongue drum.

Honesty is becoming more and more a rarity in this world. And I can honestly say that I’m a man who loves the forest to the point of being deep in my soul. It is my roots from birth date. And I still hike, fish and enjoy the same woodlands that my father and grandfather took me too when I was a little boy.

I thought it would be cool to bond my passion for wood flute and drum music with my other passions of woodworking and the forest.

This isn’t a "How to Make a Tongue Drum" in ten steps with the objective of a finish product. But it is a path of a woodsman making a musical instrument. I always believed that the journey is the fun part. The destination only means that it is done.

I do hope you enjoy the journey.
