On a recent road trip through
southern Colorado, we visited the Comanche National Grassland.
This 440,000 acre section of high prairie was created as a wildlife refuge for the protection of prairie grassland
in 1960 by the US government.
The ironic twist is that
the US government is trying to buy the
land that is next to it and turn it into a huge play yard to try out army toys. The
locals are really fighting this by not selling. There are signs posted all over
Pinion Canyon
area stating this land is not for sale to the army.
Let’s see, I could
be watching these beautiful horses eating on the grass or watch an army tank digging its tracks across the vulnerable prairie
grassland shooting its cannon and making deep holes. That’s a tough
one.
There is a web site you can
visit if you want to learn more about it. http://www.pinoncanyon.com/
Getting back to the horses,
the dark brown one was curious and worked his way towards us. I managed to get
some pictures while he was showing off his beautiful mane flowing in the wind. He was just a hamming it
up. He doesn’t know it but I named him Sage, the high plains warrior.
Deep inside me I was envious
of the horses. They are free to do what they please. Not infected by the wrath of living in a modern society. Dealing
with a mortgage payment or the gas prices. Just wondering around eating clumps
of grass while listening to the ever blowing prairie wind scented with sage and juniper.
I hope you enjoyed the beautiful horse photos. I know I was glad to have had the good fortune to take them.
